Learning through engagement – Service Learning

Learning through engagement – Service Learning

As part of the Master's degree programmes in Primary School Teaching and Secondary School Teaching, all students complete the extended profile area (BPO 2021) with the Master's professionalisation module (PMA).

Definition according to Heinz Reinders: „Service learning is a form of teaching and learning in which theoretical seminar components are combined with the social engagement of students. The aim of service learning is to improve the link between theory and practice and to promote the social commitment of students.“

Quality features of service learning:
(Celio, Durlack and Dymnicki (2011))

  • Close link between practical and academic content
  • High level of student participation in the selection and design of service learning projects with simultaneous supervision by experienced adults;
  • Intensive cooperation between academics (lecturers/teaching staff) and community practitioners on a content-related and structural level
  • Frequent opportunities for high-quality reflection
